United Van Lines is the nation’s largest household goods mover and offers customers full-service to do-it-yourself moving options.
The company’s roots extend back to the 1920s in Cleveland, Ohio, when a company called Return Loads Service was created as the moving business began to gradually shift from railroads to the over-the-road transportation of household goods. After delivering goods, movers needed tonnage to haul back to the point of origin in order to make the round-trip profitable for their trucks. Return Loads Service offered a way for movers to share business with each other for mutual benefit.
United Van Lines, with its unique agent ownership structure, was founded in 1947. Regulatory reform in the early 1980s prompted many changes within the moving industry and United moved with them. The company is the only major van line to have retained its original ownership structure throughout its existence.
Even from the early years, United continued to introduce services to better serve its customers. One of these services includes its Premium Moving Service, giving customers the option to move using containers. Benefits include fixed service dates; safe, secure, cost-effective storage solutions; exclusive use of the container and white glove services. Containers are just another way United can offer customers full-service to do-it-yourself moving. Other programs and services introduced include a web-based quoting platform and MyUnited personal online move planners.
As the nation’s leading corporate mover, United also systematically expands its transportation capabilities to meet more of its corporate customers’ needs. In addition to household goods, United transports trade shows and exhibits, specialized commodities, delicate electronic equipment and other types of shipments requiring special handling.
Today, United maintains a nationwide network of 400 affiliated agencies in the United States and additional representatives in Canada. United agents are all independently owned businesses that affiliate with United for the centralized services that the van line and its parent company, UniGroup, provide.
Through the agent network, the company serves nearly every city and small town across America with the best moving and storage services available – from packing the truck to unloading. It has earned the business of more than 400 of the Fortune 500 companies and is a leading General Service Administration (GSA) approved carrier meaning the company assists military members with relocating.

Mayflower Transit is one of the nation’s oldest household goods moving companies and one of the most well-known names in the moving industry. The company provides full-service to do-it-yourself moving and storage services for residential, government and corporate customers.
Mayflower was founded by Conrad M. Gentry in Indianapolis, Ind., in 1927. Gentry was an Indiana grocer who frequently had to haul supplies locally in support of his business and saw the possibilities of profiting from long-distance truck hauls. He and a friend, Don Kenworthy, decided to create a national moving company that could meet the expanding transportation demands of a country on the move. Together, they formed a new company, Mayflower.
More than 80 years later, Mayflower Transit is one of the nation’s largest movers of household goods and other commodities requiring specialized handling. Mayflower’s growth has mirrored the growth of the country. In 1940, after obtaining the first nationwide household goods operating authority certificate issued by the Interstate Commerce Commission, Mayflower introduced a succession of improvements in its equipment and service and its market share grew steadily. By 1960, its name was the most recognized in moving, a distinction Mayflower maintains to this day.
After resisting a hostile takeover in 1986, Mayflower underwent a leveraged buyout that took the then publicly held company private; six years later, it went public once more and in March 1995, it was acquired by UniGroup. Mayflower today is both a sister company and an active competitor of United Van Lines, also owned by UniGroup. In 1997, Mayflower’s corporate headquarters were relocated from Indiana to suburban St. Louis.
Throughout its history and into today, Mayflower continues to look for ways to better serve its customers. In 2012, the company introduced its Preferred Moving Service which gives customers the option of moving or storing items using containers. Customers responded well to the program because they enjoy the benefits of choosing their deliver dates; storing their belongings in a safe and secure location; having exclusive use of the container; and receiving white glove services. Other programs and services added include a web-based quoting platform and MyMayflower personal online move planners.
More than 300 agents in the United States and additional representatives in Canada are affiliated with Mayflower for the centralized services that its parent company, UniGroup, provide. These agents and the entire Mayflower network carry on the tradition started in 1927 of moving families around the country with care and expertise.

Both United and Mayflower independently developed successful international household goods and specialized commodities transportation activities, often utilizing many of the same overseas affiliates. The van lines’ success in the rapidly growing global marketplace created an opportunity for UniGroup to expand its operating horizons.
The company did so by establishing UniGroup Worldwide Moving in 1996. The subsidiary is responsible for coordinating the servicing of all international transportation and relocation activities for UniGroup.
UniGroup Worldwide Moving is a mix of UniGroup owned companies in Europe and Asia, UniGroup agents in North America and non-UniGroup owned network partners in areas of the world where UniGroup does not have owned locations. This network of asset-based moving companies allows UniGroup to deliver true global presence and provide consistent quality, worldwide compliance and local expertise on a global scale.
UniGroup Worldwide Moving has evolved its service offerings through the years to keep pace with the requirements of corporate, military and residential customers. In addition to delivering expert, consistent international household goods moving services, the company can provide relocation management, destination services, customs brokerage and other related services for household goods and high-value products through its other subsidiaries Sterling and UniGroup Logistics.
